چکیده

7 The effects of entrained air on microstructure and transport properties of concrete with up to 11.5% air at different w/c 8 ratios, curing and conditioning regimes were investigated. It was found that air voids disrupt the packing of cement and 9 increase the heterogeneity of the microstructure. The width of the affected interface is around 30 μm. Gaseous 10 diffusivity and permeability are increased by up to a factor of 2-3 at the highest air contents. This effect is similar to that 11 due to increasing w/c ratio from 0.35 to 0.50 when samples are conditioned at 52% r.h or 50 ̊C. The effect on sorptivity 12 is less consistent, while the effect on electrical conductivity is influenced by the moisture condition of the air voids. It is 13 estimated that every 1% increase in air concrete increases transport by 10% or decreases it by 4%, depending on 14 whether the air voids act as conductors or insulators. 15

Saturation of Air Entrained Voids and Its Implication on the Transport of Ionic Species in Concrete

Air entrainment is commonly used to improve the durability of concrete materials exposed to freezing and thawing. While the influence of air voids on freeze/thaw damage and salt scaling is frequently studied, the influence of entrained air voids on ionic transport has been studied less frequently. Since ionic transport in concrete materials relies on pore fluid as the medium of conduction, only...

Correlated Effect of Air Gap and PVP Concentration on the Structure and Performance of PVDF Ultrafiltration Hollow Fiber Membrane

Polyvinylidene fluoride/polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVDF/PVP) hollow fiber membranes were fabricated by dry-jet wet-spinning process. The correlated effects of the air gap length and PVP concentration ((1) the air gap length effect at the low and high PVP concentration in the dope solutions, as well as (2) the effect of the PVP concentration at the same air gap length) on the cross-section structure ...

ESTIMATING THE 95 th PERCENTILE OF THE PASTE- VOID SPACING DISTRIBUTION IN HARDENED CEMENT PASTE CONTAINING AIR ENTRAINMENT

The spacing equations of Powers, Philleo, and Pleau and Pigeon are used to estimate the uniform thickness of paste surrounding entrained air voids that is required to encompass 95 % of the air-paste system. Spacing equation accuracy is determined by comparison to the numerically exact result of Lu and Torquato. The air void system is approximated by spheres with radii from a lognormal distribut...

Effect of Fast Freeze-Thaw Cycles on Mechanical Properties of Ordinary-Air-Entrained Concrete

Freezing-thawing resistance is a very significant characteristic for concrete in severe environment (such as cold region with the lowest temperature below 0°C). In this study, ordinary-air-entrained (O-A-E) concrete was produced in a laboratory environment; the compressive strength, cubic compressive strength of C50, C40, C30, C25, and C20 ordinary-air-entrained concrete, tensile strength, and ...

Enhanced Compaction to Improve Durability and Extend Pavement Service Life

A review of several past studies clearly shows the effect of reduced air voids on improved fatigue and rutting performance of asphalt mixtures, both in the laboratory and field. Depending on mix type and experiment (which included constant-stress bending beam fatigue testing and field results from WesTrack), fatigue performance improved between 8.2 and 43.8% with a 1% decrease in air voids. Lik...
